King Alpin (d.c.840) King Alpin was ruler in the ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada. The 34th King, he reigned for only three years before being killed in a raid on Galloway. In Laight a standing stone remains, raised to his memory. Kenneth MacAlpin (d.858) Son of Alpin and brother of Donald I, Kenneth is credited as the Dalriada King who united the kingdoms of the Scots and Picts to become the first King of Scotland. Sir Robert MacAlpine (1847-1935) Working in a Lanarkshire mine aged eight, Robert MacAlpine started his own building firm by the age of twenty-two. With his sons, his hugely successful company undertook many great projects such as Wembley Stadium, Glenfinnan Viaduct and Borrowdale Bridge. ‘Concrete Bob’ was knighted in 1918.
