George Bannatyne (1545-1608)

Edinburgh merchant and burgess, born in Angus, best known as a collector of Scottish poems. He compiled an impressive anthology of contemporary of the Scots poetry of his age extending to eight hundred folio pages, divided into five parts.
The Bannatyne Manuscript is considered, one of the great sources of Middle Scots literature. It contains many works by Henryson, Dunbar, Lyndsay, Alexander Scott and Alexander Montgomerie
It is now held by the National Library of Scotland.

Scottish clergyman and scribe who served as secretary to John Knox.
Sir William Macleod Bannatyne FRSE (1743-1833)

Scottish advocate, judge, antiquarian and historian. Son of Roderick Macleod and Isabel, daughter of Hector Bannatyne of Kames. He became an advocate in 1765, on the death of Lord Swinton, promoted to the bench and became Lord Bannatyne when he succeeded his mother’s estates on the isle of Bute. He was responsible for greatly extending Kames castle on the island close to the town of Port Bannatyne but sold it to the Hamiltons in 1812.
Bernadine moved to Edinburgh and died in Whiteford house in the Canongate. The building is now a home for retired veterans.

Corra Castle, in Lanarkshire, was built in the 1500s, and was once a Bannatyne stronghold. The castle is now abandoned and ruinous.
